Derrida’s Philosophy of Hospitality and the English Test
Abstract:
The paper summarises the main features of Jacques Derrida’s Philosophy of Hospitality. Derrida brings out the concepts of the law of hospitality versus the laws of hospitality. He also made a distinction between conditional and unconditional hospitality. These features become the lenses through which the paper evaluates the significance of English tests to the Filipino visa applicants to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and United Kingdom. The present policies requiring English tests appear to be signs of hostility or of being inhospitable. This paper also presents some thoughts and policies which are perhaps more hospitable not only to Filipinos, but also to other applicants from non-english speaking countries.
