Biography: Theresa Lowry-Lehnen is qualified as a Specialist Practitioner in General Practice Nursing and a Teacher of Science. She is a graduate of MMUH, The Open University, NUIM, St. Mary’s Teacher Training University College, London and The University of Surrey. She has a PhD, published a number of books and medical journal articles and is a registered Teacher with the Teaching Council of Ireland. Having qualified as an RGN and a Post Graduate in Coronary Care Nursing at the Mater Hospital Dublin, Ireland in the 1980s, Theresa worked in Medical, Surgical, Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units at home and abroad for over 15 years. She moved from the secondary to the primary health sector in the early 2000s and qualified as a Specialist Practitioner in General Practice Nursing at Surrey University. She also trained and qualified as a Teacher of Science at St Mary’s Teacher Training University College, London, where she received a commendation for her teaching practice in 2005. She worked as a Science Teacher for four years in London, where she taught Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Key stage 3 and 4 (GCSE), Biology at Key stage 5 (A Level), Health Science at Key stage 4 (GCSE) and Key stage 5 (A Level). Theresa has over 35 years’ experience in clinical nursing practice, combining her practice with 15 years in educational, teaching and lecturing roles. She worked in a variety of Primary Care settings including, GP Practice, NHS Direct, Nurse led Walk in Centres and Minor Injury Units in the UK and Community Intervention Team, General Practice and Out of Hours GP Clinical and Triage Nursing Services in Ireland. She is currently employed as an Associate Lecturer in Psychology and Health Sciences and as the full-time Nurse Practitioner at the Medical Centre, Institute of Technology, Carlow. Theresa was shortlisted for the Practice Nurse of the Year Award 2018, at the GP National Awards, and published a new book ‘Practice Nursing: Clinical Guidelines and Procedures in Practice’ in December 2018. She was awarded the Irish Practice Nurse Association (IPNA) Educational Bursary Award 2019, for her research project- ‘Smokeless Campus: Smoking Cessation Initiative’ and has been shortlisted for both the Practice Nurse of the Year Award 2019, at the National GP Awards and the ‘Nursing Project of the Year Award’, at the Irish Healthcare Centre Awards 2019.
